The coarse bronze is for cleaning and harder wax removal. The nylon is for polishing of melt and liquid waxes. For a simplistic approach, after scraping your ski, use the bronze side lightly from tip to tail a for a few passes, then switch to the nylon side and brush the base from tip to tail another handful of times to polish the base.
